When a vessel has towing gear extending far from its stern, a large danger zone trails behind and to the side of that vessel. To cross safely, you should keep clear of that gear by passing on the side opposite to where the gear extends and cross ahead at a safe distance. In this scenario, going to the port side and crossing ahead gives you room to maneuver and avoids the extended gear, reducing the risk of entanglement or contact as you pass. Other options don’t provide the necessary clearance: crossing behind could bring you into the gear’s reach, continuing on your current course doesn’t create the needed separation, and stopping to take a bearing doesn’t resolve the risk and wastes time.
